Description
Mariano Ortuzar 1977 watercolor/paper. 25 x 21 inches. Provenance: private owner.
Biography: Mariano OrtuzarThe following text is from C. J. McNaspy “America” Magazine, N.Y.Mariano Ortuzar, who was born in Santiago, Chile, is not only one of the most gifted Chilean watercolorists but has attained international renown in this medium.Paintings by Ortuzar are in the collections of Pope Paul VI in the Vatican, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, Mrs. A. Onassis, Vincent Price collection, Italian Princess Borghese and Prince J. DeBorbon, Chilean Ambassadors and other personalities. His art clearly shows a character both spiritual and mystical, one of peace, simplicity and delicacy which is, doubtless, the results of years spent in a religious institution and in the study of theology; by strange coincidence, it lends his work a great similarity to oriental art.His work is to implant, through his painting and his word, the beauty of nature under the universal aspect of peace, light and joy in all parts of the world.Giorgio Natili, a critic of Rome, said, “The water colors of Mariano Ortuzar are marked with great sensitivity…in this terrible world his style is an invitation to serenity and a lesson in poetic peace.”“Congratulations Mariano! The world needs, more than ever, your personal vision of joy and light, like the dawn of creation.”______Mariono Ortuzar is known for watercolor painting of techniques of clarity, delicacy of transparencies, contrasts of light and dark, perspectives and harmony of colors. His favorite subjects are landscapes of his native Chile, famous for its beautiful lakes, forests, volcanoes, seaports, canals and glaciers and European, Asiatic and American scenes.Ortuzar has traveled extensively throughout South America, Europe and Asia, and has had 65 one-man shows in Chile, Peru, Argentina, United States, Italy, Spain, France, and Denmark, as well as exhibitions in Paris, Madrid and Rome, during 1962 under the auspices of the Chilean Ambassadors.Collections of his work have been shown in galleries in Florence, Venice, London, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Madrid, Paris, New York and several other American cities.Among his awards are: Award of Honor and First Prize, Chile, in 1953, a Special Prize in 1957 for Water Color from the Ministry of Education in Santiago, Chile, a medal for Water Color from the National Exhibition Hall of Fine Arts in 1960 in Santiago. He was a member of the Salmagundi Art Club in New York.
