Description
Seven 18th Century English Plates by Chelsea Derby and Two Decorated by James Giles. Comprising four fluted Crown Derby plates painted with blue-scale grounds, and floral garlands in polychrome enamels within Rococo mirror-shaped reserves; a Chelsea Derby fluted plate with gilt dentil rim above sprays of fruit and moths sparsely to the face; and two plates with scalloped rim, gilt dentil bands, looping garlands of red-berried laurel leaves centering a pink-floral-garlanded grey urn, with tiny sparse moths; and green camaÔeu floral clusters covering flaws to plates to underside. To the four blue-ground plates; iron-red cross, crown, crossed batons, dots and D; underglaze blue 41; each with a combination of iron red 36 and 33 to footrims. Gilt interlocking anchor and D for Chelsea-Derby. The last two plates are not marked. London, England. Circa 1770-1800. 8 3/8" Diameter to 9 1/4" Diameter} Provenance: Property from the Estate of Arthur Thomson, San Francisco, CA. {Condition: Two of the blue scale plates with restorations and overpainting, two with shallow 1/4" rim chips and minor wera to gilding and scraches. Shallow 3/4" rim chip to fruit plate. One of the urn plates has a ground foot rim; and an abrasion through glaze to base of plate on underside now over-painted with flowers. All of the plates have minor dots of kiln speckling consistent with manufacturing.}.
