Schweizer Privatsammlung, Basel.

giwoyo (auch kiwoyo) genannte Maske die der Tänzer im 45-Grad-Winkel auf der Stirn trug.

Dargestellt ist vermutlich ein alter Mann. Dass Kinn endet in einem Bart, einem Symbol für die Autorität und Weisheit der Ahnen.

Die Gestalt schlägt eine Brücke zwischen sichtbarem und unsichtbarem, heiligem und profanem, lebendem und totem, traditionellem und neuzeitlichem. Sie erschien bei Heilritualen und schützte vor Krankheit oder Schadenzauber.

Leon de Sousberghe (op. cit.) vermutet den Ursprung der giwoyo-Maske im Zusammenhang mit den ersten Begegnungen mit bärtigen europäischen Missionaren zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts.
