Description
John Cox Stevens New York Yacht Club Commodore's Document Box. The hinged top metal box with two carry handles was used on board "Gimcrack", the first flagship of the New York Yacht Club owned by John Cox Stevens. Stevens was a founder and served as the first commodore of the New York Yacht Club as well as being a member of the America syndicate which won the trophy in 1851 and became the America's Cup. This box comes from his yacht "Gimcrack" of 1844. The box was sold by the New York Yacht Club to one of it's members at a member's only fund raising auction many years ago. The box has a faux wood grain painted exterior. Dimensions 22" x 15 1/2" x 13 1/2".
