Description
Set of four Old Master drawings,18thc
Each:
Frame: 14 1/8" x 10 7/8"
Drawing: 8" x 5"
Each drawing depicts a famous tragic pairing of Greek mythology. In the order of the photos, the first pair is Echo and Narcissus, the second is Hero and Leander, the third is Epimetheus and Pandora, and the fourth is Cephalus and Procris.
The first drawing depicts the heartbroken mountain nymph Echo being rejected by Narcissus, who falls in love with his reflection in a pond.
The second drawing depicts Hero, a priestess of the goddess Aphrodite, coming across the drowned body of her lover, Leander.
The third drawing depicts Pandora, the first woman, being gifted to Epimtheus from Zeus. Despite having made a vow not to accept any gifts from Zeus, Epimetheus marries Pandora who later releases the evil contents of 'Pandoras box' unto the world.
The final drawing depicts Cephalus and Procris, husband and wife, after Cephalus has accidentally impaled Procris with a javelin, killing her. Distraught with her death, Cephalus then goes into exile in Thebes.
