Item Details
Description
Toys 'R' Us x George Barris "Geoffreymobile" Hot Rod Built by Dick Dean W/Custom Enclosed Trailer (Museum Exhibited) - This amazing hot rod was built for the "King of Toys" Charles Lazarus and designed by the "King of Kustomizers" George Barris. The vehicle was created in 1980 as Lazarus' children's store Toys 'R' Us had become a household name, and it's mascot Geoffrey the Giraffe an icon. The vehicle was built at the request of Lazarus, designed by George Barris and built by Dick Dean to be used as a promotional and parade vehicle that would carry Geoffrey (along with his family wife Gigi, son Geoffrey Jr. and daughter Baby Gee), at events across the country. The vehicle was a classic hot rod that had been extended to act as a double-decker bus complete with a staircase on the back. The interior was built with functional storage perfect for carrying costumes, people or promotional items to be given away. It featured a C-cab and Model-T style grille seated on chrome wheels with Pro-Trac street rod tires. The engine and drivetrain were crafted from a German Ford Taunus industrial V-4 engine with a Volkswagen transmission and a Saab steering set-up, and was later rebuilt and upgraded by Hank Tatro between 1983-1984 to add gauges and dashboard, along with an Oldsmobile Toronado subframe and a '72 Olds 350 Rocket engine to create a legitimate hot rod. The vehicle's exterior design elements include bright red paint, red leather upholstery, Toys 'R' Us logo hood ornament and painted on the doors, "Toys 'R' Us Geoffrey Mobile" painted on the sides along with Geoffrey himself, and George Barris signature plate on the back bumper. This is an amazing piece of both pop culture memorabilia and an amazing vehicle credited to one of the most renowned Hollywood car builders of our time. The popular toy store closed its stores in the U.S. last year, however it was announced last year that the company plans to open some stores in 2020. This vehicle is currently on display in a Missouri museum. Shipping will be at the expense of the buyer, and the auction house will help facilitate shipping arrangements, if necessary.
