Description
Ceramic dish. Century XVIII.Ceramic plate reflecting Manises from the 18th century with geometric representation.Measurements: 23 cm. (diameter)Gilded or lustrous earthenware, also known as lustreware, is a type of glazed decoration with iridescent effects produced by metallic oxides applied in a third firing on an already fired glaze. The first lustrous ceramics were produced at the beginning of the Abbasid Caliphate in the 9th century. In the Iberian Peninsula, the common thread of the techniques of pottery of Muslim origin, and especially of gilded earthenware, were the Moors, distributed in the centers of Manises, Paterna, Quart, Alacuás and Muel. The golden faience can be considered one of the most unique and recognized products of the Valencian ceramic focus, although it originally imitated the Malaga productions in profiles and decorations.Manuel González Martí and later various specialists, historians and ceramologists, have studied in depth and with some profusion the production of metallic luster in the potteries and industries of Manises, which became a necessary reference in the chronicle of European ceramics. In Manises, the clayey clay bisque that was used came from a loam from the surrounding area, which once bisque-fired was glazed with a transparent coating.Lead and tin were mixed in a proportion of 10 parts to one, or the same: for each arroba of lead, three to four pounds of tin were added, materials that after being calcined in a special oven, were joined with small quantities of salt and sand and, once ground, were dissolved in water, bathing the pieces with the resulting liquid. Thus, the basis of this gilding recipe was sulfurized silver and copper. The mixture obtained after a complex process was diluted in vinegar and applied as decoration on the pieces in the third reduction firing. Most of these pieces that we find today belong to the 20th century or the end of the 19th century, with very rare cases of ceramics from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, as is the case of this particular collection.
