Description
German .800 Silver Jardiniere, first quarter 20th century, M. H. Wilkens, Bremen, in the Rococo taste, of shaped navette form, decorated with elaborate embossed rococo scrolls and reticulated latticework panels, with the narrow ends with openwork double "C"-scroll handlees, each surmounted by a putto holding a laurel wreath, the whole raised on four rococo scroll feet and fitted with the original conforming gilt copper liner, h. 7", l. 15", w. 7-1/4", 20.22 t. oz. (excluding liner).
Condition
Overall Condition: Good. The trailing ribbons on the wreaths in the putti's hands are broken and lacking. One of the rococo scroll feet is bent upwards about 1/4" resulting in a slight wobble, with some surrounding rough scratches where an attempt to correct the bend has been made. The lower edge under the cartouche on the opposing side has likewise been bent upwards, with small 1/8" tears at the ends. Above this, on the cartouche, there is a 1/2" vertical hairline embossing flaw visible on the exterior and interior, but not affecting structural integrity. Marked, on the lower edge "Wilkens" with the crown & moon reichsmark, "800" and the trademark of P. Bruckmann & Sohn of Heilbronn. The liner is in good condition with no dents, breaks or holes; the gilding is worn (from use) to the copper on much of the interior, but the exterior is still intact and bright. In all, an attractive and well-detailed piece with minor condition issues, none aesthetically or functionally detracting.
