Rare & important Tiffany & Co. sterling silver compote from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago with globe mark on bottom. Measures 5" tall 9.25" wide, weighs 28.4 OZT. During the 19th Century, many countries began to host international fairs and exhibitions, with the accessibility of travel, to promote tourism and commerce. In 1893 Louis Comfort Tiffany exhibited a chapel interior at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago that brought him international acclaim few American artists enjoyed at the time. The Columbian Exposition World's fair has been described as the third most important event in American history. By the end of the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Tiffany & Co. had exhibited a total of 1,159 pieces in their pavilion to an audience that spanned over 27.5 million visitors during the fair’s six-month duration. The objects exhibited by Tiffany & Co. at the Exposition are highly prized by collectors.
