Description
This lot consists of an unframed watercolor illustration on paper, done in the vivid Orphism style of Sonia Delaunay (Russian-French, 1885-1979). "1946 Sonia Delaunay" is hand-painted at lower right corner of composition. A rich and elegant composition, this piece would make a striking addition to any collector's gallery. Overall measurements approximately 13" x 9.5".
A stamp at bottom of composition, which appears to be written in Hebrew, bears the English words, "Tel-Aviv, P.O.B.", as well as a handwritten number.
Reverse side of piece features a handwritten inscription, colored in with colored pencil and graphite, that reads, "Sonia Delaunay. Rythme Colore".
Sonia Delaunay (Russian-French, 1885-1979) was born in present-day Ukraine, and moved to St. Petersburg at an early age. It was here that Delaunay's natural artistic capacity was recognized and nurtured. At 18, Delaunay was sent to art school in Germany, where she stayed for a few years before continuing on to Paris. Following the birth of her son in 1911, Delaunay stitched together a spontaneous, geometric quilt for the small child. This single act inspired the inception of Orphism, a stylistic fusion of Cubism and Neo-Impressionism. According to Delaunay, "When it was finished, the arrangement of the pieces of material seemed to me to evoke cubist conceptions and we then tried to apply the same process to other objects and paintings." Delaunay is now a defining member of the Paris avant-garde, and was the first living female artist to have a retrospective of her work displayed by the Louvre.
