Description
Mezcala Jade Beads (300 BC-500 AD)
The Mezcala sourced their jade in what is the current state of Guerrero. The mottled green jade was used to create sculpture, ritual vessels, and, most importantly, beads. Like many of Mesoamerica’s great civilizations, the Mezcala wore jade to show their connection to nature, unity with the Gods, and status. Later placed in tombs dug under their homes, they escorted their owners to the afterlife.
