Item Details
Description
PETER OPSVIK (Stranda, Norway, 1939).Globe Garden Chair, 1980s.Beech wood and dyed wool fabric.Dimensions: 100 x 60 x 70 cm.More than thirty years have passed since Peter Opsvik launched his Globe Garden design, a completely innovative chair whose casual structure became a landmark of Scandinavian design. The Globe Garden, like the other creations Peter Opsvik is still working on today, was conceived as a challenge to standardization and the established norms of the society in which we live: in a world in which the triumph of technology has led to a completely sedentary lifestyle, in which we spend hours and hours sitting in front of the computer screen and in which a "unique" posture is imposed on us as the correct posture, the Globe Garden was born as a challenge to convention, by breaking the rules of "how to sit well" or "sit correctly". As the designer himself argues, it should not be forgotten that our ancestors lived in trees. Thus, the chair can be understood as the branches of a tree that continue through the legs and become supporting roots. Its high seats ensure a better perspective and better ergonomics, and make it perfect for any dynamic and functional everyday space.Peter Opsvik works together with seven other people in his studio and, although most ideas come from him, they become industrializable designs and products thanks to teamwork. His designs focus on interior design and ergonomics, providing environmentally friendly solutions. Among his most famous creations was the Tripp Trapp, a multifunctional children's highchair that took the Norwegian to the top of Scandinavian design in the 20th century. Throughout his career as a designer, Peter Opsvik has been awarded numerous prizes: the Red Dot award 2013 "Best of the Best" for Nomi High chair, the Red Dot award 2011 (for Capisco Puls), the IF design gold award 2011 (for Capisco Puls) and the Norwegian Design Award for Excellence 2011. Opsvik was awarded the classic award for design excellence in Norway for the Tripp Trapp chairs in 1996 and Håg Capisco. In 2008 he was awarded the Anders Jahre cultural and Nordic Design Award (Nordiska Designpriset). Opsvik has also received Torsten & Wanjas Söderbergs design award in Sweden for its pioneering, variable furniture and furniture. In 2013 Norsk Forma (The Foundation for Design and Architecture in Norway) awarded Opsvik Jacob-prisen for 2012. His works have been exhibited in museums around the world, such as the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (Gent) in 1999, the Deutsches Museum (Munich), The Lighthouse (Glasgow), as well as the Design Museum in London. Some of his other exhibitions have been shown at The West Norway Museum of Applied Art, Bergen 1996; at Kunstlerhaus (Artisthouse) mit Galerie, Göttingen 1990, at Gallerie V.I.A, Paris 1990, at Applied Art Museum, Oslo 1986, in New York, Houston or in Chicago and Tokyo in 1982.
