Description
***Auction Highlight*** 1854-s Gold Dollar $1 Graded Choice Unc By USCG. 0 Congress authorized the gold dollar in March 1849. The denomination was struck sporadically at the San Francisco Mint from 1854 through 1860, and then again in 1870, after which gold dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint only. The 1854-S is not only the first-year issue from this mint, it is also the only San Francisco issue of the Type One design. Just 14,632 pieces were struck. Uncirculated survivors rarely appear at auction, especially in near-Gem condition. This Superb PQ Example displays a razor-sharp strike and satiny brass-gold and peach mint luster. No singular abrasions are worthy of mention. Tied for 3rd finest known.
