Description:
3 volumes. lvi, 211, [4]; [2], 321, [14]; vi, 231, [1] pp. Stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait by E. Scriven after I. Allen; 54 folding copper-engraved plates of diagrams and figures, all but one folding; 2 folding tables. (8vo) 22.3x14 cm (8¾x5½"), original paper boards, pages untrimmed & largely unopened.
First complete edition in English of Sir Isaac Newton's Principia, deemed the greatest work of physics -- A magnificent, untrimmed copy in the original boards. This edition incorporates Andrew Motte's first translation of the first two books into English, which first appeared in 1729, together with the third book, which was published separately in 1728; it also includes a Life of Newton, and other material. Curiously, pp. lvii-lx, which should be at the end of the preliminary matter in Vol. I, are at the end of Vol. II between the final two leaves of the index, signed e2, e. Perhaps a printer's stratagem to maximize efficiency in paper usage. Of utmost rarity in such state.
