Detailed Information:
The Half Eagles are the coins of United States of America that were minted for circulation from 1795 to 1929. They are made from .900 pure gold and have a face value of $5. The Act of April 2 1792 authorized the production of these coins. These were the first gold coins to be minted by the United States of America.
Since its inception in 1795 the Half Eagle has gone through a series of changes in its design on both obverse and reverse. There were Turban Heads Draped Bust and Classic Head before the Liberty Head came into being in 1839.
The designer of the Liberty Head was Christian Gobrecht and the Liberty Head is also known by another name the Coronet Head because in this design we can see a left facing bust portrait of Lady Liberty whose hair is beautifully tied into a bun which is held by strings of beads and she is wearing a simple coronet on her head with the inscription “LIBERTY” on it. The reverse features a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast and holding olive branches and arrows in its talons design inspired from the Great Seal of United States.
However there are two subcategories in the Liberty Head designs. The first type is without a motto on the reverse with just the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.” The second type is with motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” engraved on a banner above the eagle along with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.”
The first type was minted from 1839-1866 and the second type was minted from 1866-1908. Also before the 1839 Liberty Heads the reverse sported inscriptions “5 D” for denominations. Christian Gobrecht changed this to “FIVE D” in his Liberty Head coins.
The specialty of Liberty Head coins are that these are the only US coins a single design which was being minted at seven different US Mint facilities which are Philadelphia Dahlonega New Orleans Charlotte Denver San Francisco and Carson City. Those coins which were struck at Philadelphia has no silver alloy in them but it just has .900 gold and .100 copper. However those coins minted at southern branch mints of Dahlonega and Charlotte had a high natural silver content.
Allow these vintage coins to grace your investment portfolio as they will definitely stabilize it. They are a great and smart investment option due to their age and rarity giving them a high demand in the market.
