Description
Large hanging bronze sculptural bronze oil lamp, with a large arc shaped openwork metal figural shield decorated in profuse stylized suns and other shapes, and a central high relief representation of Gajalakshmi, or Lakshmi With Elephants, one of the most significant manifestations of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, and a frequent Hindu and Buddhist motif. Lakshmi is depicted seated on a lotus, flanked on both sides by an elephant (gaja). The elephants are shown as "lustrating" her, pouring water from their trunk over the goddess. This avatar of Lakshmi represents prosperity, good luck, and abundance. The lamp is connected to a chain by a four segment chimney with a stylized representation of Garuda, a bird-like divinity in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain faith, acting in his capacity as the vehicle mount of the Hindu god Vishnu, one of the principal deities of Hinduism, who is depicted traditionally, with four arms. Rich patina. Good overall condition, loss to one side of the chimney bird wing finial. Measures approximately 12 in. x 11 1/2 in. x 9 in. (lamp sculpture), 35 in. (column, chain, and hook, extended). Hill Auction Gallery will not ship. Gallery will refer a local shipper for international buyers. Purchaser pick up available upon request.
