François Le Vaillant was an 18th-century French explorer known for his descriptions of animals and birds in Africa. In 1780, he began a voyage to the Cape of Good Hope with the Dutch East India Company. While there, he collected various specimens of animals and plants, and encountered local natives, the Hottentot people. This volume includes views of the Hottentots and their villages, hunting excursions, and large African mammals such as giraffes and lions.

This volume is a beautiful mid-19th-century edition, bound in fine polychrome boards – green and gold embossed – with a color illustration of a lion hunt on the front cover.
