Item Details
Description
American Silver-Mounted Naval Dirk Owned by Edwin Booth , early 19th c., grooved pommel, double-edged diamond-shaped blade, the scabbard with oval frog stud, engraved "Dagger of Edwin Booth", and on the other side "George B. Penrose", blade 4 3/8 in., overall 8 in Provenance: Collection of Brooke and Maria Fox, Metairie, LA. Note: Edwin Booth (1833-1893) was the most famous Shakespearean actor in the 19th c., and brother of John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of Abraham Lincoln. It can be assumed that the George B. Penrose refers to George Bright Penrose (1857-1903), a prominent cotton broker, who served on numerous boards, was captain of the Krewe of Comus, and served as treasurer for the city of New Orleans.
