Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. Finely painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on wood, this icon depicts Saints Zosimus and Sabbatius standing in profile and facing one another with extended hands. Saint Sabbatius was the first monk to inhabit one of the Solovetski Islands just south of the Arctic circle. After his passing, the Russian hermit Zosimus took up Sabbatius' responsibilities. Over time, Zosimus founded the first monastic society of Solovki on the largest of the Solovetski Islands. This icon portrays both protege and predecessor speaking with one another, above which a heavenly image of the Virgin Mother hangs. Size: 2.625" W x 3.5" H (6.7 cm x 8.9 cm).

Condition
Wear to imagery and around peripheries as shown, fading and losses to pigment as shown, and minor surface abrasions. A small pierced suspension hole and sticker adhesive residue on verso.
