Eastern Africa, Ethiopia, Oromo peoples, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden headrest with a concave conical base, a cylindrical pedestal neck, and an attached headrest with a curved profile and rounded lateral ends. The base and neck are decorated with several concentric incised rings which give it a personalized presentation. The headrest portion is held in place with resin-covered twine, and the entire piece exhibits a deep-brown, highly lustrous patina. Size: 6.125" W x 5.625" H (15.6 cm x 14.3 cm).
Provenance: ex-private old New England, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s

Condition
One stable hairline fissure to base and minor nicks to base, neck, and headrest, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas, and beautiful dark patina throughout.
