West Africa, Yoruba peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A fascinating piece of Afo currency in the form of an iron shovel blade with a broad cutting edge, a low edge, and a shallow flanged end. Many groups in the northeastern region of Nigeria and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa use smithed iron based on actual shovel types as currency; these could also be repurposed into functional items in a pinch! Size: 10.85" W x 15.45" H (27.6 cm x 39.2 cm)
Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, collected in 2015; ex-Denver, Colorado, USA collection
