16th C. Korean Joseon Dynasty Glazed Stoneware Vase
Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

East Asia, Korea, Joseon dynasty, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A graceful buncheong (form of traditional stoneware) vase with a light grey-green hue, resting on a ring base that rises to a piriform body, a slender neck, and a flared rim. The lustrous crackled surface is formed from the celadon glaze, and a faint sanggam (underglaze pattern) is visible on one side; three circular abstract shapes and a ring around the shoulder below the neck. Celadon glaze could range from transparent, to white, yellow, green, or cobalt, depending on the mixture and firing process. While celadon was used to create any of these desired colors, green was often the ideal hue because of the value of jade stones in eastern Asian cultures. The crackling is not a result of age, but rather from the glazing process, and while intitially accidental, it became desirable because the random spiderweb shapes added interesting formations to the surface. This stoneware has some substantial weight to it, and has a pleasing muted green hue. Size: 4.1" W x 6.75" H (10.4 cm x 17.1 cm)

Ceramic wares from the Joseon Dynasty came to signify the cultural achievements of the artisans from the Korean peninsula. This vase demonstrates the "sanggam" technique they developed that involves etching motifs on the body, then filling in the area with colored slip, usually black or white, and then covering it with the celadon glaze. The invasion of Japan in 1592 resulted in many Korean master potters being forcibly relocated to Japan, disrupting the production of Korean pottery and resulting in a shift in pottery styles as the younger generation rediscovered the techniques their predecessors had used. In the 1930’s the name “bunjang hoecheong sagi” was used by Korean art historian, Go Yuseop to describe the ceramics, such as this vase, which were decorated with celadon glaze and this technique translates to "gray-green ceramics decorated with powder."
