oil on canvas, 22 1/4 by 36 1/4 in.

Antonio Jacobsen was born in Denmark in 1850, trained at the Royal Academy of Design in Copenhagen, and moved to New York as a young man. He often painted commissions for sea captains and shipping companies, and was known for the accuracy of his details. His works can be found in the Shelburne Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, and the New York Historical Society, among others.

The subject of this work was likely "El Dorado," a steamship in the famed White Star Line.
