Herman Palmer was born in Utah in 1894. He studied at the Art Students League in New York and was known as a leading animalier artist of his time. Palmer served in the Navy in World War I.

He was a pupil of Mahonri Young (1877-1957), and several of his animal sketches are in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and other works can be found in the Brooklyn Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago, among other institutions. He was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 1940 and died in 1946.
