3 John Rogers Groups - Horse Themes: (Roger's affinity for the horse led him to create a special large door in his studio in order that the anatomy of the horse as subject would appear alive and accurate. His equestrian subjects {in groups} ran the gamut from plow horse to the Morgan). Titles include: Going For The Cows - The Peddler at the Fair and The First Ride. Tallest is 20.5 in. High. More Information on John Rogers and his masterpieces: These groups "...are made from a hard form of plaster manufactured in the 1800's. There is an amateur or iron. Delicate features such as horses' ears, hats, etc. are made {reinforced} from pewter." John Rogers credentials as an American Master: He was an {elected} member of the National Academy of Design and exhibited there annually for nearly 30 years; his work was displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and in their catalogue; his extant collection is owned by the New York Historical Society. Rogers' studio in New Canaan, CT. has been designated a National Historic Landmark. John Rogers is credited with being a pioneer in the making of elastic molds for works of art. He patented many of his works, displaying the dates on the base of the sculptures. William Cullen Bryant wrote this to Rogers in 1869: "You have succeeded to a higher degree than almost any artist of any age in making sculpture a narrative art, giving motionless and speechless figures the power to relate their own adventures." source: John Rogers: The People's Sculptor by David H.
