Description
Irwin Lefcourt, self-portrait with wife and child, 24 x 18", SLL, O/B,He was a student at the Academy of Design in NYC along with his good friend Leonard Bocour. They both later moved on as teenagers to study at the Arts Student League, while working as artist assistants in the studio of Emil Ganso where they learned to make hand-ground oil paint. In 1932, they joined their names, Irwin Lefcourt and Leonard Bogdanoff (Leonard officially changed his name to Bocour in 1951) and named their new paint company Bocour Artist Colors. Lefcourt left Bocour in 1936 to become a print curator at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Later on he started the Art Fairs Gallery near 15th Street where many abstract-expressionists worked and met-up.
