Description
1775 Spirit of Patriotism Patriot King British Bolingbroke Revolutionary War eve
“Worry is the only insupportable misfortune of life.”
– Henry St John, Viscount I, Bolingbroke
Henry St John Bolingbroke was an 18th-century English politician who was a notable proponent of the Jacobite Rebellion and the overthrow of King George I. He wrote numerous letters and essays concerning numerous topics including reflections on philosophy and science principles. While many of this letters and essays were considered highly controversial, even for the 1700s, Spirit of Patriotism and Idea of a Patriot King were among the most polarizing. In these works, Bolingbroke outlines how nationalism and patriotism retained their link to radicalism. It was from these works that Bolingbroke became one of the founding fathers of English conservatism (Armitage). Armitage also notes that the
“chief sources for Bolingbroke’s Patriot King were Cicero’s De Officiis’and Francis Bacon’s De Augmentis Scientiarum.”
Following the initial reactions to these works, Bolingbroke’s Spirit and Patriot King have become called “perfect systems of practical politics” – essential making this work into, as Armitage calls is, “an advice book on top all advice books”.
