Description
Large impressive well cast Chinese bronze sculpture. Republic Era, possibly earlier. Features Laughing Buddha, Hotei, or Budai, also called the "Fat Buddha," seated on a stylized Chinese dragon, a traditional symbol of power, strength, and good luck in Chinese folklore and culture. The dragon is modeled with a stylized tail of a fish, an important motif in Chinese myth: The word for fish, "yu," is a sound-alike for "abundance" and "affluence." In one hand, the Buddha holds a gold ingot, a symbol of affluence, and in the other hand a bag, a motif in Zen Buddhism representing abundance, prosperity, and contentment. A statement piece with great presence. Rich antique patina, some oxidation. Good overall condition, normal wear, mostly to bottom. Measures approximately 44 in. x 37 in. x 27 in. Hill Auction Gallery will not ship. Gallery will refer a local shipper for international buyers. Purchaser pick up available upon request.
