Item Details
Description
Stirring, official accounts of those individuals who have been awarded the highest honor for bravery in the service of America. Highly illustrated with many b/w drawings and numerous full-color plates. Volume 1 recounts stories from the American Civil War. Stories such as Gen. O. O. Howard having his right arm shattered by a bullet, yet continuing to wave that arm above his head to arouse his soldiers at Fair Oaks during the Civil War. Stories such as that of Col. Joshua Chamberlain leading a bayonet charge to repel the Confederate attack at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg (this account is dutifully portrayed in the movie “Gettysburg” with Jeff Daniels playing Chamberlain). Stories such as Corporal Peter McAdams retrieving his wounded friend from the field of battle at Salem Heights by rushing 250 yards under heavy fire to pick the man up and carry him back on his shoulders to safety. For his gallantry he was cheered by the opposing force who desperately tried to kill him one minute, then saluted his bravery the very next. A rather thick, heavy volume. Deeds of Valor from Records in the Archives of the United States Government; How American Heroes Won the Medal of Honor – History of Our Recent Wars and Explorations from Personal Reminiscences and Records of Officers and Enlisted Men Who Were Rewarded by Congress for Most Conspicuous Acts of Bravery on the Battlefied, on the High Seas and in Arctic Explorations edited by W. F. Beyer and O. F. Keydel. Published 1907 by The Perrien-Keydel Company. Tips showing, fraying at spine ends. Front and rear joints split near top. Front hinge a bit wobbly. Otherwise clean with interior pages completely clean and sound. 8.25 x 11. 558 pp.
