**First Time At Auction**
Central Africa, Angola, Neolithic period, ca. 6000 to 3500 BCE. A fine group of four hand-knapped stone tools with a variety of shapes. Three of the stones are a brick red color and one is a creamy light orange-yellow and may be a chert stone. The largest is ovoid with a cutting edge that encircles the body, and this one may have served as a cutting or scraping tool. The other three are smaller, slightly square shaped with knapped edges, and could have served similar purposes as the larger. Knapping is the process where a harder stone is hit against a softer stone to shape it into a tool by flaking off the edges. Although simple, knapping took some patience and skill to create and get the desired shape without shattering the stone or breaking off too much. These four tools are wonderful reminders of humankind's modest technological beginnings! Size (largest): 4" L x 1.75" W (10.2 cm x 4.4 cm); (smallest): 1.75" L x 2" W (4.4 cm x 5.1 cm)
Provenance: Collected with late husband Edward. S. Ross, with the California USA Academy of Sciences collected 1970's and 1980's
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
