**First Time At Auction**

Europe, Viking period to Medieval period, ca. 800 to 1300 CE. A flattened forged-iron piece that was probably part of a spade or shovel. The v-shaped arms have slots along the interior edge to fit onto the broad wooden blade. The iron would reinforce the blade and was a lighter addition to the tool. This method of creating a part iron and part wood shovel was also cost effective, since the owner could carve their own handle and blade. In addition, if the wood wore out, the iron blade could be reattached to a new spade and handle. This blade edge has developed a rich russet patina over the ages! Size: 8.5" L x 6.25" W (21.6 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
