Theodore Roosevelt Sr. Doc on American Museum of Natural History Letterhead

Single page manuscript document on pale blue American Museum of Natural History letterhead. Dated "May 11th, 1874". Signed by the Presidents father when Roosevelt Jr. was 16 years of age. Lightly toned to left edge, right corner clipped, mounting remnants of verso. 5" x 8". Accompanied by a print of a young Roosevelt dressed in Ranchman clothing. 7" x 9.5".

A fantastic piece from an early period of this Museum's history. This document is a payment for salary:

" From Museum to J.B. Holden / For amount of salary from May 1st to May 15th / $66.66 / Receipt of payment ..."

Theodore championed land and wild life conservation more than any other President in our history. After becoming president in 1901, Roosevelt used his authority to establish 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves, four national game preserves, five national parks and 18 national monuments on over 230 million acres of public land. Today, the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt is found across the country. The Museum of Natural History acknowledges his contributions by dedicating a Hall in his name. The hall features four exhibition areas that examine Theodore Roosevelt in four stages of his life: as a young naturalist with an early passion for nature; a firsthand observer whose experiences as a rancher in the North Dakota Badlands impressed him with the threat of extinction to animals such as the American bison; the Conservation President who took unprecedented action and placed some 230 million acres under federal protection; and the Lifelong Explorer whose post-presidency expeditions took him to an arduous exploration of Brazil’s River of Doubt.

A bronze sculpture of Theodore Roosevelt at the center of the hall invites visitors to sit next to him and contemplate his role in conservation, as well as the vital importance of protecting nature today. Next to the sculpture, a bronze medallion embedded in the floor depicts American bison grazing in Theodore Roosevelt National Park with an inscription “There can be no greater issue than that of conservation in this country”—an excerpt from Roosevelt’s Confession of Faith speech, delivered at the Progressive National Convention in Chicago on August 6, 1912.

An important piece from Roosevelt's youth.
