Sigmund Freud Autographed Envelope to Nephew and Publicist

Unsigned Envelope autographed in the hand of Sigmund Freud to his nephew, Edward Bernays. Postmarked "Wien 3.X.22". Fine condition neatly opened. 6" x 5".

Freud was Bernays' Uncle twice over. His mother was Freud's sister and his father was the brother of Freud's wife, Martha Bernays. In 1920, Bernays organized the publication of Freud's Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis in the US, sending royalty money back to his uncle in Vienna. However Bernays was significant in his own right, and was considered a pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda, later referred to in his obituary as "the father of public relations". Bernays began his career shaping public opinion describing the masses as irrational and subject to herd instinct. However his application of psychoanalytic principles to public relations and advertising came only after reading Freud's "General Introductory Lectures," a gift from Freud to his nephew in thanks for a box of Havana cigars. While no single person can claim exclusive credit for the ascendancy of advertising in American life, no one deserves credit more than Bernays.
