Description
This lot consists of an ink and watercolor illustration on paper, done in the more modern, Dada style of Francis Picabia (French, 1879-1953). A handwritten inscription at bottom of composition reads, "Francis Picabia. Milynia." This overlapping, collage-like image depicts a number of human and insect figures. An incredibly intricate composition that teems with life and mystery. An excellent addition to any collection of modern art. Unframed measurements approximately 11.25" x 8".
Francis Picabia (French, 1879-1953) was a prominent member of the avant-garde. He is known for his highly abstract pieces, oftentimes replete with color and contrasts. Although initially enamored by Impressionism, Picabia was soon swept up into the Cubist art movement, then Dada, and eventually a bit of Surrealism. Picabia regularly drew upon religious, erotic, and gaming imagery (read: dice, checkers). Today, the works of Francis Picabia are highly sought after by world-class collectors both private and public.
