Description
This lot consists of a framed acrylic painting on board, done in the American modernist style of Charles Demuth (American, 1883-1935). A hand-painted inscription at lower left corner reads, "C. Demuth". Image depicts a small mill or plant with beams of light refracting through its multiple smokestacks. A sleek, precisionist composition. Overall framed measurements approximately 22.5" x 25.5".
Charles Demuth (American, 1883-1935) was born in, lived, and died in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where the home he shared with his mother has now been made into the Demuth Museum. Demuth's most iconic piece, 'I Saw the Figure Five in Gold' (1928), was inspired by the poem, 'The Great Figure', by Demuth's friend, William Carlos Williams. "Search the history of American art," Ken Johnson wrote in The New York Times, "and you will discover few watercolors more beautiful than those of Charles Demuth.
