This lot consists of an unframed tempera painting on paper, done in the bold Spatialist style of Lucio Fontana (Argentine-Italian, 1899-1968). A vibrant, ovular fiel of lime green has been lined with small punctures. This dynamic piece commands the attention of any who come into contact with it. Lucio Fontana (Argentine-Italian, 1899-1968) was born in Rosario, Argentina to Italian parents. His father, Luigi Fontana (Italian, 1865-1946), was an accomplished sculptor. Lucio Fontana returned to Italy in the mid-30s, where he studied at the Accademia di Brera. The following decade brought Fontana through Italy and France, where he discovered the world of abstraction and expressionism. It was not until 1947 that Fontana, having conferred with a number of writers and philosophers, was finally ready to release his manifesto on Spatialism ("Spazialismo"). Having lost a number of his works to the ruin of world war, Fontana dove headfirst into the concept of "Space Age" installation art, piercing the rigid confines of two-dimensionality and doing away with illusion altogether. His groundbreaking work is now instantly recognizable, and timelessly modern by design.
