A Quebec drawing was dated later by Dickinson while near the French and Spanish border as July 13, 1930 when Dickinson was a Daniel Gallery artist. At this time, Dickinson traveled with a large portfolio of previous drawings. He had planned to show his work to Paris art dealers for a show. Due to money problems and health issues, Preston Dickinson was subsequently to barter works for lodging and medical expenses until his death in Spain on November 25, 1930. At the time of his death, Preston Dickinsons portfolio of drawings was returned by the US Embassy to Dickinsons sister Enid. With Daniel Gallery defunct in 1932, Enid Dickinson eventually sold this portfolio to Edith Halpert, Downtown Gallery, New York. Due to the July 11, 1930 date, it is thought that this Quebec drawing was part of this portfolio.

Two similar finished versions both called Street in Quebec 1926 are an oil painting of a summer scene in the Phillips Collection and the latter a pastel of a winter scene in the collection of Yale University. The similarities to this charcoal View of Quebec classifies this as a preparatory drawing. Richard Rubenfeld in his disseration on Preston Dickinson suggests that there was a common sketch that linked these two works of different seasons together.

Known for his Precisionist style of painting depicting architectural subjects, especially industrial scenes, Preston Dickinson was a native of New York City who studied at the Art Students League from 1906 to 1910 with George Bellows and Ernest Lawson. Shortly after he left for Paris, where he lived from 1915 to 1919 and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais. In Paris, he was much influenced by Cubism, which for him was somewhat modified by his exposure to the work of Paul Cezanne. Returning to New York, he showed at the Daniel Gallery. An inveterate traveler, he returned to Europe in 1930, hoping to live there but died of pneumonia .
