Item Details
Description
Original page of the March 4, 1826 issue of the Richmond Enquirer, containing an advertisement, (middle of third column) in which James Monroe offers "For sale, my tract of land in Albemarle County, heretofore my residence", noted as being "five miles from Charlottesville and six from the University", (University of Virginia) adding "Of its advantageous situation for health and society no remark need be made here". Besides Ashlawn - Highland, with its "commodious dwelling house, buildings for servants, and other domestic purposes, good stables, two barns with threshing machines, with grist and saw mill" etc., another tract of 700 acres is offered. According to the Highland website, the rise of cotton in the 1820s, which could not be grown on the mountainous, grain-growing land, contributed to Monroe's financial straits, necessitating the sale of the land.
