19th c. portrait of William Calvert of Baltimore MD., attributed to Richard Morell Staigg (1817-1881, RMS), who was born in Leeds, England and came to America in 1831 eventually settling with his family in Newport R.I.. He worked in Boston, Baltimore and N.Y.C.. A search on the National Portrait Gallery shows many other portraits done by him. Calvert was related to Martha Custis who was the wife of George Washington, and also to Lord Baltimore, a Roman Catholic who granted the sale of Maryland by William and Mary and was bound and determined that the new Colony should have Religious freedom. 30" x 25". Monogrammed "RSM".
