Item Details
Description
Hyperrealist boat. Oil on canvas 30 x 40 in. Connecticut artist. From askart.com: The following, submitted April 2004, is from Carolyn Celeberti a representative of the artist.Karl Soderlund creates oil paintings intended to provide a soothing place for the mind to focus and rest, a visual element that breaks through the canvas's dimensional plane." Perhaps it is the bow of a boat that appears to lurch toward the viewer, encouraging one to touch it. Or, it is a sandy path intended to beckon towards a sunny shoreline.Soderlund finds particular beauty in all things including that which is weathered and beaten. From the peeling paint and crackled wood of his "Red Boat," to the faded siding of "The Boathouse," he strives to convey the texture of nature and history of his subjects. From childhood, Soderlund seemed to have an innate sense of color and composition. He began painting at an early age, inspired by everyday images that made growing up in New York and Connecticut memorable to him. Later, he put aside his paintbrush to attend Denison University, where he majored in Economics. Confident that he had chosen the "safer" career path, he settled into a corporate job in San Francisco. Painting was merely a hobby and a means to fill his blank apartment walls with art that he otherwise could not afford. However, when his company transferred him to New York City, a community rich in art, he left the corporate world to focus solely on his true interest. He furthered his education at the Art Students League in New York City, Yale University and the Silvermine Guild in Connecticut, and he studied with realist painter, Daniel E. Greene.Soderlund became is a founding member of The Fairfield Gallery Association in Connecticut. Working primarily in oil, he focuses on the sea and the structural landscape that grows around it. He, his wife, who is also an artist), and their two young children live near the Connecticut shore a wellspring of inspiration."PERIODICALSArt Business News: Nov.
