Description

1698 Bible Paralipomenas Chronicles Latin, French de Sacy, Jansenism

The Paralipomenas Chronicles Translated into Francois with an Explanation from the Saints

Fathers and Ecclesiastical Authors Louis-Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy or Les Paralipomenas Chronicles Traduits en Francois Avec Une Explication Tiree des Saints

Peres et des Auteurs Ecclesiastiques Louis-Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy

1698 Brussels, Eugene Henry Fricx

Louis-Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy 1613-1684 was a priest and scholar at Paris Port-Royal abbey.

Through his studies, he became the first to translate the Bible into French for the benefit of regular people who spoke no Latin.

Known as the Bible du Port-Royal or the Bible de Sacy, it opened the Faith to the laity. Port-Royal, a seat of Jansenism, had been involved in accusations of heresy in the 1650s-1660s, and de Sacy had even spent time in the Bastille.

But he came out more fervent in his faith than ever.

He worked on the translation until his death, and his friend Pierre Thomas worked on the rest from de Sacy's.

His 32-volume translation of the Old & New Testaments was first printed in 1696.

This, book 13 of the series, is an extremely early printing at 1698.

It contains the Paralipomena things left to one side, more commonly known in English as the Books of Chronicles.

These are the last two books of the Hebrew Bible and are a brief retelling of history and genealogy from Adam all the way through to the restoration of Jews to the Holy Land under the Persians.

Its focus is largely on the House of David, and particularly the architecture and rituals of the First Temple.

Condition
VG+ Antiquarian. By some standards Fine. This book is gorgeous. Boards are straight and virtually unblemished corners show lightly typical shelf wear. Spine intact including brilliant gilt titling. Spine tail fully intact. Joints are extraordinarily strong, with only slight wear to the top of the front hinge and bottom of the back. Quite easy book to hold, open, read. Inside the book is even nicer. The marbled pastedowns endpapers hold their color brilliantly, especially the front it is hard to believe the vibrant color is 322 years old! No bookplates, stamps, stickers, signatures, dedications, or any marring. Paper extremely high-quality stock, which shows only faint toning and virtually no foxing. Only occasional exceptionally light spot and a possible repaired closed tear on leaf 369-370 with no loss suggest that book was ever read. The book is so well-preserved that even its original silk bookmark is intact and attached. 6 1/4" x 4", 573pp
