Stenciled batik cotton coverlet, probably commissioned from a dyeing workshop as a gift for an important occasion, southern China, circa mid 20th c. (post 1949). This cloth is laden with phoenixes, symbol of rebirth (longevity) and feminine grace and peonies, emblematic of romance and prosperity, both omens of good fortune. Size: 40'' x 62'' (102 x 157 cm).
