His childhood passed in Turkestan. In 1905, after graduating from the Orenburg Cadet Corps, he entered Petersburg University, but after studying for several years, he left him to study at the workshop of the watercolorist D. I. Bortniker, then at the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, in class B. E. Makovsky (1908-1910). A great influence on the fate of the future artist was provided by classes in the private school of M. D. Bernshtein, where N. K. Roerich, I. Ya. Bilibin, and sculptor L. V. Sherwood (1910-1911) taught.A. N. Volkov continued his studies at the Kiev Art School (1912-1916), with F. G. Krichevsky and V. K. Menka.Since 1916 he lived in Central Asia. Director of the State Museum of Art of Central Asia (1919), director of the Theater of Proletarian Culture (1922), teaches at Turkestan art workshops (1919-1921) and the Tashkent Art College (1929-1946).A member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia - AHRR (since 1927), a participant in the exhibition of the Tashkent branch of AHRR (1928).Member of the Art Society "Masters of the New East" (1929).Created the art association "Volkov Brigade" (1931-1932).He lived and worked in Tashkent. In 1921-1923 he traveled around Turkestan (Bukhara, Khiva, Samarkand) where he was involved and actively participated in the design and manufacture of military badges for the BNSR and KNSR.In 1930 - 1934 he traveled to Uzbekistan in (Shahimardan, Kadyrstroy, Selmash.Honored Artist of the Uzbek SSR (1943) [4].People's Artist of the Uzbek SSR (1946).Personal exhibitions (1943), (1944-1945), (1957).
