A William & Mary seaweed marquetry inlaid burl walnut secretary cabinet late 17th century The upper section with a pair of doors enclosing two shelves and three drawers, the lower section with a hinged secretary drawer opening to a writing surface and enclosing a door, drawers and pigeonholes. height 84 1/4in (214cm); widtrh 41 1/2in (105.5cm); depth 23 1/2in (59.5cm) Provenance: Property of a Beverly Hills Collector.
Condition
In overall restored condition with a highly polished finish. Smells of fresh varnish. Surface skimmed. Veneer lifting buckling and with losses and replacements. General marks, nicks, scratches, cracking, losses patched repair and overpainted restoration. Interior of upper section probably reconfigured with later shelf stays for two adjustable shelves. Re-backed. Later mirror plates to case doors with later backings. Repairs to fall front. Probably previously with lined writing surface. Timber to writing surface later veneered, with scars and patched repairs. Hardware replaced. Framing veneer to case drawers later. Cracking and replacements to moldings. Feet later. No key. Drawers slide easily.
