Description
**First Time At Auction**
Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast (probably southern Alaska), Tlingit people, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine ceremonial canoe paddle, hand-carved from well-grained red cedar, with a minimalist presentation. The paddle is composed of an elongated diamond-shaped blade which gradually tapers to a point, a thick tubular handle, and a short, cylindrical hand grip attached laterally at its midpoint to a small tenon with four iron nails. Faint traces of red and black pigment are visible on both sides of the blade as well as along the handle, suggesting this paddle was adorned with vivid Tlingit imagery at one time. Size: 6" W x 48.75" H (15.2 cm x 123.8 cm).
Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection
