Description
**First Time At Auction**
East Asia, Japan, ca. early 20th century CE. A wonderful set of antique Japanese carpentry tools made of wood, iron, and steel mounted against a large wooden plaque with slender lengths of twine. The tools include a stocky iron hammer with a chisel end (gennoh), a double-sided iron pull saw with large and small teeth (ryoba), a spade-shaped iron chisel with a wooden handle (nomi), a small iron scoring blade (kiridashi), a lengthy steel hatchet (nata), and a wooden inkpot (sumitsubo). The ryoba has two Japanese kanji characters stamped onto the handle, perhaps denoting the manufacturer or the owner. Size (wooden plaque): 24.375" W x 18.5" H (61.9 cm x 47 cm); size of largest tool (double-sided pull saw): 25" L x 4" W (63.5 cm x 10.2 cm).

Condition
Tools and wooden plaque have surface wear commensurate with age and use, and minor nicks and chips to wooden handles and some metal components. Light earthen deposits throughout. Nice patina to wooden components. Twine terminals glued together on verso.
