Davids notes: This painting has been off the market for 30 years, and is from my private collection. It's an unusual and complex painting ostensibly of a tea warmer on a chest of drawers with a lot of items strewn about, and roses appearing everywhere, including her hat, her purse, in a pot in front of her, etc. I acquired it at an antique show, and I liked it because I clear out estates, and reminds me of how the bedroom looks when the relatives have gone through all the drawers, looking for jewelry or other precious items, and leave everything in disarray.
One thing magical about the painting is that the tea warmer, intending to be shown as an inanimate object, is painted as a living breathing small person. Her crooked finger where she holds the umbrella is a sign that the artist in imbuing the tea warmer with lifelike ability and actions. She stares at the camera and smiles, aware of the inside joke. Beithan must have enjoyed painting this image, since a few years ago in 2018 a very similar work by the same artist came up for auction. Called Stillleben Mit Teapuppe, the painting might have been originally intended to be seen with the present lot as a pair. It has the same bureau, the same tea warmer, and other similar and sometimes exact elements of the room, like the same cup and saucer(Arnold auction house in Frankfurt Germany, May 26, 2018, lot 478, Stillleben Mit Teepuppe, Still life with Tea Warmer).
