Signed in image "Edith F. Johnston" and dated April 1, 1955 at top of sheet edge.
Paper size 13 7/8 x 9 3/4" (35.3 x 24.8 cm).
Edith Farrington Johnston (1888-1974) is noted as a twentieth-century botanical illustrator working in tandem with various botanists including Dr. Clarence Hylander to create illustrations, watercolors, and prints to accompany a series of publications. Some of the titles include "A Book of Wild Flowers", "A Book of Garden Fruits", and The Macmillan "Wild Flower Book." In addition to composing watercolor pieces, Johnston also made lithography plates for numerous botanical texts. She was praised for the detail-oriented nature of her work, and for the artist prowess she exhibited. In the late 1940's the Museum of Natural History exhibited fifty watercolors by Edith Farrington Johnston on wild flowers of Colorado and the Rocky Mountains.
