Description
Title: Venetian Fisherman.
Artist: Lucien Gautier (1850-1925).
Engraving on vellum, 1886.
Published by H. Figuet & Co. Editeurs, 20 Rue de la Paix, Paris.
Signed in pencil.
Image size 15 1/16 x 22 1/2" (38.2 x 57.1 cm).
There are two types of images on this lot - one is a photograph to show the rippling in the vellum. The other is a scan, which properly shows the richness of the engraving, as our scanner has a tendency to flatten the paper.
A scene of boats on the Giudecca Canal. In the distance stands Doges Palace and St Mark's Campanile. The twin domes of St. Mark's Basilica can be seen over the top of the palace. The Rialto Bridge is depicted in the remarque in the lower left margin.
Lucien Gautier was a French etcher and engraver born in Aix-en-Provence. He began his career by reproducing paintings by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Charles Jacque in print form, but eventually moved onto making original works, for which he is known. He produced handsome views of many major European cities, including Paris, Venice, London and Rome.
