Description
GEORGE E. HURRELL, Carol Lombard , c. 1936, 13.375x10.375" Gelatin silver print, Printed c. 1936, Photographer's blind stamp on print recto in lower left corner. Photographer's name inscribed in pencil on mount verso.
George Hurrell revolutionized Hollywood portraiture between 1925 and 1950 through his ability to capture and create the glamour, allure, and celebrity of his subjects. In many of his images, elegant artifice renders them almost as living sculptures. Before Hurrell's time, promotional stills throughout the movie industry were in a homogeneous style, characterized by soft-focus, generic studio settings, and standard lighting placement.

Originally a painter, George Hurrell (1904 - 1992) started photographing other painters' works in order to earn a living in the artist's colony of Laguna Beach, California. In 1927 he opened a photographic studio in Los Angeles. Silent film star Ramon Novarro became one of his first clients, and within two years Hurrell became the premier Hollywood glamour photographer. He worked for Metro-Goldywn-Mayer (MGM) studios for three years beginning in 1930, where he made the publicity stills for all of the studio's stars. By 1936, one national magazine stated that "a Hurrell portrait is to a normal publicity still what a Rolls Royce is to a pair of roller skates."
Hurrell also worked during the 1930s as a freelance photographer for several Hollywood studios and as a fashion photographer in New York. Esquire magazine regularly published his images, and he also photographed in Mexico. In 1960 he became a television advertising producer, but he continued to photograph until his death at age eighty-eight.
